Chelsea’s 25-man Premier League squad

A letter written by a teenage Steven Gerrard.. and why his time at Liverpool is up

Written by admin on  Categories: dvanseqr Tags: , ,

There is an excerpt from an open letter written by , aged 15 and three-quarters. It was part of a self-appraisal exercise for young players at Liverpool’s academy. This was Gerrard’s assessment of his character and his future… “I am easily approachable, always up for a laugh and try to get on with everyone. “The coaches would say there are no doubts about my footballing ability but I need to control my temper on the field. I hope they think I am a good lad off the field as well. “In five years’ time, I see myself he Sun says Scott looks set to join Newcastle for free on a two-year deal.Scott, 21, has been out of contract since being let go by Chelsea last month and joins the Toon on a freebie. The central midfielder is said to have agreed to personal terms andhopefully playing first team football, settled with a girlfriend and talking of houses and family.” That went to plan then. The letter was shown to me ahead of an event – organised by football writers – to honour . That it actually goes into greater self-analysis should surprise no one. Maybe it was that tendency to examine his own plus and minus points that fooled successive England managers into believing he was not suitable for the captaincy. There were suggestions that Fabio Capello, for example, believed Gerrard was not confident and assertive enough to lead his team. It was just o Gerrard was given the England captaincy way too late. He should have succeeded David Beckham in 2006. Particularly with England, Gerrard’s honesty has often been mistaken for self-doubt. But honesty is Gerrard’s most enduring quality and honesty has surely led him to this decontent_imgcision. Honesty tells him the time is fast arriving when a place is not guaranteed in Liverpool’s most effective X1. And who could blame Gerrard if part of him wanted to escape the claustrophobia of a city passionate about its football and its footballers? Way back, Gerrard explained what happened to him in the wake of his sending-off in the first Merseyside derby of the 1999-2000 season. “I had people being aggressive towards me in the street and spreading stories about me doing things. “If you play for Liverpool and live local, you will get people spreading rumours and doing the jealousy bit.” And for a decade and a half, Gerrard has had to put up with that sort of nonsense. But Gerrard is fiercely proud of his roots. In the area where he was brought up, the local council is now chargChampions League round of 16 opponents RB Leipzig. The two clubs were paired together in today’s draw.King said, “It’s going to be a tough test. RB Leipzig play with pace and intensity and they have been a surprise package so far, so it will be a gooding so much for the hiring of football pitches, that local clubs are folding in increasing numbers. He is one of a dying breed. With that pride comes humility. At that football writers’ event, Gerrard was asked about his one-club status. Here is his reply. “A lot of people talk about my loyalty to Liverpool but what doesn’t get mentioned is Liverpool’s loyalty to me. “I've been here since I was eight years of age and the contracts have kept coming.” Until now. Maybe Liverpool could have tried harder to keep Gerrard. But maybe his continuing presence when not in the team would have been an unwanted distraction for Brendan Rodgers. Whatever the unexposed reasons for his departure, you always had a nagging feeling that Gerrard would fancy a peek at life outside the Anfield goldfish bowl. And for that honesty and humility with which he has conducted his Liverpool career, Gerrard deserves to enjoy it. The aspirations of the 15-year-old’s self-appraisal have been met – it’s time for fresh goals. There have been a million tributes to Gerrard over the last couple of days and there will be a million more before his final game, so it is tough to think of a fitting one. “I hope they think I am a good lad off the field as well.” Steven Gerrard: good lad. That’ll do.

Everton and Roberto Martinez should be thanked by England as new contract ensures Barkley can be banked on

Written by admin on April 29, 2018 Categories: simphtng Tags: , ,

It is a moment that could help define . A young lad with the world at his feet finds a mentor, shows loyalty and focuses on building a career. Basic principles like that are hard to find in the modern game. In a world of fast cars and even faster money, it is all about how quickly you can get up the status ladder. has stolen the headlines, but it is Ross Barkley’s commitment to Everton with a new contract that gives us all hope. Hope of success. Hope of a national hero. Hope that others will follow his lead. Some of us were ready to believe was ready to wave goodbye to lifelong friends at Everton. We imagined him packing his bags, probably landing in a pile of cash at Manchester City. The next Scott Sinclair. The next Jack Rodwell. A promising talent destined for a season on a subs bench near you, soon. A deal in the region of £60,000-a-week at Goodison is not to be sniffed at for a lad of 20, particularly one who only made his big breakthrough last season. But this really is not about the money. Upon signing the deal, Barkley spoke of his passion for the club. He told of the moment Wayne Rooney walked out to join Manchester United, leaving him – a young Evertonian – heartbroken. Behind the scenes, you can be sure Roberto Martinez made sure the youngster knows there is no place like home. This manager-player relationship seems as strong as any you will find in the Premier League. Over the past year Martinez’s belieect Adama Traore.Nuno was speaking after Traore scored in Sunday’s loss to Spurs, a game in which the tally for fouls committed on the winger reached 24 for the season.”I think the referees know. They realise they should punish the tackles – just lf in Barkley and the way he has managed his game time has helped the midfielder mature. That progress will continue. Greg Dyke and Roy Hodgson must want to throw an arm around the Everton boss right now as is doing as much as anyone to shape the future of England’s game.            Barkley arrived in a flurry of step-overs, fancy flicks and backheels that bedazzled seasoned Premier League stars. He weighed in with top-class goals and rave reviews, and by the end of the season earned a World Cup call-up. He is the kind of player we crave in our national team. A natural two-footed attacker who can shrug off a challenge as easily as he can then secontent_imgnd a dipping drive into the top coleave West Ham United on loan this season due to UEFA rules. The 22-year-old attacker wants more game time, as he has struggled for first team opportunities under Manuel Pellegrini. But he cannot leave for another club on loan in January, as he played rner. Comparisons have already been made to Gazza. One thing for sure is Barkley is going to be a major part of Hodgson’s campaign. He has made sure of that by staying at Everton. Hodgson perhaps did not choose his words too cleverly when trying to deflect attention from him in a World Cup warm-up match against Ecuador. He suggested the youngster was giving the ball away too often when all he really wanted was to ensure Barkley did not become a poster boy too soon. He wants Barkley to fulfil his potential. Hodgson also wants a side of players who are featuring at the top level week-in, week-out – and that is becoming harder. There are fresh considerations this season. Where will Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fit in at Arsenal? Can Adam Lallana become a regular with Liverpool? Is Danny Welbeck going to stay in the frame at Old Trafford? Barkley’s role at Everton is one to watch. In time he will add more depth to his game, and by the time France 2016 gets under way he should be one of the first names on the England team sheet. When Dyke drew up his plan for England to win the World Cup in Qatar 2022 he was ridiculed. With England knocked out of Brazil 2014 in June, there were suggestions the whole thing really was a mockery. We can forget about trophies for now, but if there is to be a brighter future we must not underestimate the influence of Martinez. He has paid special attention to Barkley’s development, yet he is backing other English talent, too. Leighton Baines, John Stones and Phil Jagielka are all in his plans. Even Gareth Barry was back on Hodgson’s radar after Martinez rebuilt him last season. None of this will have gone unnoticed by Dyke and other suits at the FA. Everton – – are being admired further afield than Merseyside. In two years’ time when Hodgson steps aside and England look for a new manager, maybe – just maybe – Martinez will emerge as a contender for the job.            How will England do at the 2018 World Cup?1000+ VOTES SO FAR

Fight night: Hatton brothers will be in opposite corners for the derby

They are boxing’s brothers-in-arms but Ricky and Matthew Hatton will be in opposite corners tonight. Ricky will be in the blue corner as, like virtually every other member content_imgof the Hatton clan, he is a Manchester City fan. In the red corner will be Matthew, who decided to support Manchester United when he was six after a customer at the family’s pub gave him a badge of the Old Trafford club. The banter between them this season has been as lively as one of their sparring sessions while United and City have slugged it out for the title. Ricky landed the first jab and the former two-weight world champ couldn’t resist a dig at his brother’s reason for being seduced by the dark side, as he sees it. “What a pathetic excuse,” grins Ricky. “He follows United because he got given a badge the size of a one-pence piece!” Ouch! Ricky continues the attack by hitting his younger sibling with the 6-1 derby win and this still hurts Matthew. “I try not to wind him up too much, but I couldn’t resist it after the derby at Old Trafford,” said the Hitman, who puts on his biggest boxing show at Manchester’s Velodrome on June 16. “It was no good though, because his phone must have been switched off for a fortnight. “The 6-1 was incredible and yet you still hear Unitnternational says he was contacted by Les Bleus as a teen.He said, “I could’ve played for France. You hear ‘Blue Moon’ everywhere and they have the flags hanging out of their cars. “If they win, I won’t be able to leave the house.” Ricky felt that one and responds with one of his famous rib-cracking body shots, claiming his brother will be switching his phone off again come 10pm tonight. “ey’re confident signing Liverpool winger Ryan Kent.McAllister believes Rangers will be “first in line” to loan Ryan Kent this summer – should Liverpool decide against selling the winger in the transfer window. “It is ongoing, but the decisions at LPeople say that Manchester United always come good in the home straight, but there are a lot of new players in their team now,” he said. “Those players haven’t won a title before, so it’s as new to them as it is to the City players. “Tevez has got the bit between his teeth, Aguero is scoring goals and I just fancy them to win 3-1.” The winded Matthew recovers his composure and although he is nervous, he is going for the draw, which would effectively hand United the title. “I’ve got to say I’m a little bit worried,” he said. “But United are still favourites. Barcelona v Real Madrid: Five of El Clasico’s most memorable moments ahead of Saturday’s monster clash

Written by admin on  Categories: bzkegfod Tags: , ,

There have been some unforgettable El Clásico moments spanning from the first game between Real Madrid and Barcelona in 1902 to the last game between the teams now over 7 months ago.  Given the frequency of them over recent years, this has felt like an eternity. Here, in no particular order, are five memorable moments from the meetings in the modern era…. 5. The one with the “Calma, Calma…” It was the game with everything on the line. Pep Guardiola told his Barcelona players lose or draw and the La Liga title was heading to Real Madrid, carried in the hands of José Mourinho. With just 5 games remaining Barca had cut the gap down to four points, with only five games left. An early blow was Madrid taking the lead through Sami Khedira, and it wasn’t until with 20 minutes remaining that Barca finally found the breakthrough. Alexis Sánchez’s goal was futile however, for Madrid’s other giant Portuguese would effectively seal the title. Cristiano Ronaldo was put through by Arsenal man Mesut Ozil, and the former Man Utd man didn’t flinch. He smashed home and wheeled away with a now iconic celebration. “Calm, calm…I’m here” mouthed Cristiano to a silent Camp Nou. Game, set acontent_imgnd La Liga title. 4. The one with José’s debut It was the greatest start by any coach in Real Madrid history, and Jose Mourinho was the darling of Madrid. Then he met a man named Pep Guardiola and a team called Barcelona. Mourinho’s team up until this November night at Camp Nou had seemed impenetrable. They’d waved away all comers, and couldn’t have have been better prepared for Barca. Or could they. The game ended 5-0 with Mourinho’s tactics nothing short of embarrassing. Messi, without scoring, was sensational in a ‘false 9 role’ picking Madrid apart. To rub it in, Barca sent on Jeffren to get on the score sheet. It was a humiliation, the worst defeat of the Portuguese’s career. The next day Madrid were labelled thugs, Neanderthals an Manchester United are watching highly-rated Le Havre youngster Tom Cadoche. The 15-year-old is set to make a decision on his future at the end of the year. France Bleu says the defender has caught the eye of Premier League giants United, Arsenal and d medieval. Barca were labelled the dream team, from another planet and Pep a god. 3. The one with the 5-0 (twice) and….a Swansea manager He’s turned out to be a very decent manager, but Michael Laudrup back in the day was a very special player. So much so, he was one of the few to play for both Barca and Real Madrid. With Johan Cruyff in charge the ‘Dream Team’ was constructed at Barca and at the heart of it was Laudrup. Elegant, intelligent and influential. Laudrup would help Cruyff land a European Cup in 1992 – Barca’s first ever – and four consecutive La Liga titles between 1990 and 1994. One of the highlights was a 5-0 thumping of Madrid, with Laudrup and the ‘Dream Team’ in their pomp. The dream soon became a nightmare as the Dutchman and Dane’s behind the scenes bickering reached fall out. Laudrup watched the next Clásico from the stands, and for good measure a European Cup Final defeat to Milan. Laudrup wanted out. Laudrup wanted Real Madrid. His first Clásico in the white shirt ended in a 5-0 triumph for his new side, and his first season ended with a trophy. Cruyff and Barca ended with empty hands. 2. The one with the ovation 2005, and a Brazilian with the biggest smile you’ll ever see was at the peak of his powers. This particular night provided an image as powerful as the pig’s head. Ronaldinho was in town and after a first half that Samuel Eto’o had given Barcelona the lead in, it was the Brazilian who would take over. The speed and skill combined to make the sublime. His fellow countryman Roberto Carlos received the worst of it, as he could only watch as Ronaldinho left him behind. Eliaquim Mangala has left Manchester City for Valencia on a two-year deal. The 28-year-old signed a one-year extension with City in February after returning from a loan spell with Everton. He spent the 2016/17 season with Valencia.”The club has reached an agreement with Eliaquim Mangala,” Valencia said on their website. The famous full-back may as well have been on the beach in Rio. The image of the night however, was the Bernabeu on its feet. Those in white shirts stood and applauded. Real recognise real. They’d just seen Ronaldinho. 1. The one with the iconic image There has been 166 Clásicos leading up to the one this weekend, but perhaps no image is more striking, more severe, more symbolic. The head of a pig. The head of a pig on a football pitch. What was it doing there? Barca fans could ask the same question about Luis Figo. It was his third season at Madrid since he turned his back on Barca; the first time was a cauldron of whirring noise, the second season he was injured. The third would create the most powerful feeling though. Figo went to take a corner, and the game was eventually held up for 16 minutes the volume of missiles thrown was that heavy. In amongst it all, there it was, a pig’s head.
