The most discouraging part about starting pitcher ‘s throttling Thursday at Detroit is that the average velocity of his fastball was down about three miles per hour from his season-opening start April 5 against the Red Sox. For it to drop that much that quickly, I’m guessing Johnson is either harboring an injury or not used to pitching in 35-degree weather.
I’m going to go the obvious route on this one. Ain’t no one used to pitching in 35-degree weather.
Considering how good his stuff looked in spring training, I’m not about to bail on Johnson now, especially given the extenuating circumstances of Thursday’s start. If anything, I’d say he’s a good buy-low candidate.
